Banteay Srei, Cambodia

Banteay Srei means "A Citadel of Women", and was built 100% by women.

Dedicated to the goddess Shiva, this place is also known as the Red Jewel of Angkor because of the red sandstone they used to build it back in the last half of the 10th century.

It is smaller than the main temples like Angkor Wat or Bayon, but its charming atmosphere and incredible carvings and statues in the heart of the temple, make it a peaceful place to visit. ๐Ÿ™

Have you ever been there? What do you think? ๐Ÿ˜‰

We strongly recommend spending at least three days in Siem Reap if you want to enjoy the visit without rushing.

However, if you really like to discover some hidden places, mostly unknown to tourists, we think that maybe spending one week in Siem Reap will be a better choice. We can't wait to hike in the Kulen National Park when we go back there! ๐ŸŽ’

Anyhow, we really enjoyed our three days in Siem Reap. It is one of the most beautiful and impressive places we've ever been.

Here's a picture of Sylvain at Banteay Srei, a red sandstone temple with incredible carvings all over the walls. One of my favorite ones!

Ta Prohm , Angkor Wat Cambodia

The place where nature takes its place. Hidden in the jungle, this is one of the most amazing things we've ever seen.

Ta Prohm, the so-called 'Tomb Raider Temple', remains in much the same condition in which it was found.

Trees are growing up inside the ruins, green lichen covering the walls and the floor, and piles of huge stones everywhere. We felt like old-time explorers!

I must say that this has been my mobile wallpaper since we came back. If you are in Siem Reap, immerse yourself in this beautiful place! It is definitely worth it!

Let's talk about travel! We read a lot about the Angkor temples before arriving in Siem Reap.

We weren't sure which was the best vehicle to visit the whole complex. Some adventurous people said it was a nice idea to hire some bikes, but as I (Lara) am not a big fan of bikes we decided to hire a tuk-tuk instead.

I think it was the best decision to make! We spent three amazing days with our driver, and we learned a lot about Siem Reap and the Khmer culture.

#Funfact during the whole trip, we crossed a lot of different animals in the road: cows, buffalos, dogs, and even a group of chickens! If you need to pass, you just need to sound the horn, and they will gently turn away ๐Ÿคฃ We would like to give special credit to @senghong_leang our friend and tuk-tuk driver โค We hope to see you soon in 2022!

Banteay Kdei means "A Citadel of Chambers" or "A Citadel of Monk Chambers". It is located in the Angkor Archaeological Park. It is smaller and less complex than other famous temples like Bayon or Ta Prohm, but the style looks the same.

Our visit was quite out of the ordinary. Late afternoon, when we arrived, there was almost nobody there. And the most important thing: IT WAS RAINING! It wasn't heavy rain, but enough to be quickly wet. However, it was a great experience!

We really felt like explorers living the adventure, walking through the ancient paths, under the pouring rain, with our backpacks and cameras, and only the sounds of the jungle and the rain around us! This was probably the best experience to really appreciate the magic of Angkor and Siem Reap.

We definitely will go back again. ๐Ÿ˜‰

After a few days in Bangkok, we were ready for our next adventure: Siem Reap!

We must say that those three days walking through the Angkor temples were by far the most amazing trip we've ever made!

Walking through these alleys, under the rain, with almost no one around... It was the best way to start our adventure in Cambodia!

In the next few posts, you will discover the incredible Angkor Archaeological Park and the beauty of the authentic Khmer style but, in the meantime, please enjoy this peaceful scene from the Banteay Kdei temple. โค
